Patriots Roster Cuts: Players Who Could Be Let Go in 2020

The New England Patriots have a long history of making tough roster cuts to get younger and more cost-effective players on their team. With next season's roster already looking like it could be a pivotal one for the franchise, there are several players who could find themselves on the outside looking in come training camp.

One player who could be cut loose is edge rusher Deatrich Wise Jr. Wise was a bubble player coming into the season and penalties have begun to pile up for him. His ability to stop the run has also been inconsistent this year, making it possible that the Patriots explore other options at the position next season.

Another player who could be on his way out is right tackle Marcus Cannon. While he has carried himself with class on and off the field, his performance slipped a great deal in 2019 and injuries have taken a toll on him as well. The Patriots have young tackles Korey Cunningham and Yodny Cajuste waiting in the wings, both of whom command less payroll than Cannon.

Of course, no discussion of potential roster cuts would be complete without mentioning safety Patrick Chung. Though he has been a key contributor to the team's secondary for years, his age and contract situation make him a candidate to be released or traded before next season.

The NFL is a business, and sometimes tough decisions have to be made in order to build a competitive team. The Patriots have gotten good production out of their role-playing edge rushers in the past, so it's possible that they could find someone else to fill Wise's spot.
